The Mystery That Has Lasted

My Week 34 ancestor is the unknown father of Fanny Steinberg.

In short, Mr. Steinberg has been a long-lasting mystery to me. It has been a long time since anyone in my line has thought of Mr. Steinberg, and at times it feels hopeless. But then I remember that I was able to identify Fanny, so her father is there somewhere as well.

What I Know So Far

Fanny Steinberg (aka Stamberger, Steinhart) is said to have been born around 1850 in the region that later became Czechoslovakia (son Samuel born ca 1885 in Eperjes, Hungary, later Czechoslovakia, and now Prešov, Slovakia).

Where the Answer May Be Hiding

I have been working to trace Samuel in Europe and any potential siblings. I’ve not found Samuel’s birth record where I would expect it to be, but maybe a sibling was recorded in the right town – or maybe a sibling’s records might identify the town as a different one with a similar name. Maybe one of his siblings came later, when US immigration was asking for the name of the nearest relative in the home country.

One of those things will crack the mystery, not to mention the diligent efforts of JewishGen to digitize and index records.

Still Hopeful

This mystery is long-lasting, but hopefully soon to be broken. As he is my husband’s great-great grandfather, there is always hope I can use DNA or other records to identify family, and one of these days I will be able to give Mr. Steinberg his proper name.
